Twitter, Growl and Quicksilver
[edit] I’ve since created my own modification of this script that updates your status in various IM clients with your tweet. See the post for more details.
I’ve been addicted to Twitter for a while now (my twitters are in the sidebar of this site), but I’ve not found a good way of twittering on my mac. Sure, there’s twitterific, but I didn’t really get on with it (although after just installing it, I discovered the auto hide function - it taking up space on my screen was the main reason I didn’t like it). There’s also a dashboard widget for updating, but that can be quite slow to respond too.
I think I’ve finally found the perfect solution - for me anyway. I absolutely love Quicksilver. If you don’t know what it is, I’m sure you’ll find plenty of places that will extol it’s virtues, so I’m not going to bother. Basically it’s an application launcher on steroids. Soviet bloc female body builder steroids. Growl is a notification application. It tells you when certain things are happening. For example, it pops up a little blob when my bluetooth mouse is in range. It lets me know when I’m connecting to a network and what IP address I’ve been assigned. It gives me a preview of any email that arrives in mail. Things like that.
Anyway, here’s the meat of the post. Go to this web site, and download the growl-ified version of Tweet, and then head over here and follow the installation instructions. You obviously don’t need to copy the code into script editor or anything, just save it where it tells you to. Then it’s as simple as activating Quicksilver, hitting full stop and blathering to the world. Tab, typing TW then return.
Spiffy.
